If my adult child lives in a residential facility are there limits to visitation?

The only limits to visitation are those that the family or legal guardian imposes. You are welcome to visit anytime, but we encourage you to call to make sure your son or daughter will be home.

Can I take my adult son/daughter home on weekends and holidays?

Yes, but if your son/daughter lives in an Intermediate Care Facility there is a requirement to notify and receive prior authorization from Department of Job and Family Services for leave days that exceed 30 in one year.

If my adult child lives in a residential facility is there any cost to the family?

No. Typically, the needs of the individual are covered through the services they are eligible to receive. There would be no out-of pocket expense to family for needs that are related to health and safety.

Who makes sure my son/daughter gets to medical appointments?

WLRS has a health department that schedules appointments and then assists individuals in getting to their appointments if it is authorized in the IP. Written updates of every appointment are sent to family. Families may attend appointments if they choose and efforts will be made to make sure they are scheduled so to meet family’s availability if this is the case.

Who will keep me informed about what is going on in my son/daughter's life.

Regardless of what kind of environment your son/daughter lives in there is a person who is designated to make sure that you receive all pertinent information regarding your son/daughter.

Does WLRS provide services or placement to children?

At this time our residential facilities do not serve children less than 18 years of age. We do, however have a respite program that provides short term stays for children as well as an extended day program providing supervision before and after school.

How do waiting lists work?

There are different waiting lists for different types of living arrangements. The Wood County Board of MRDD manages and administers the waiting lists. People are added to the list in the order they apply. As openings become available, or as waivers are made available, individuals are contacted based on their place on the waiting list.

What kind of training do staff receive before they work with my son/daughter

Our staff receive extensive training in the areas of behavior support, resident rights & responsibilities, driving & vehicle safety, fire safety & emergency response, CPR, First Aid, delegated nursing/med pass training, specific orientation to the site where they will be working, individual orientation to the people they will work with. What kind of background checks are performed on potential staff

The following background checks and screenings are performed on all new staff before they work in their position: drug testing, State Nurse’s Aid registry (for abuse/neglect), State of Ohio Abuser Registry (for abuse/neglect), Bureau of Criminal Identification, local Sheriff check, driving history. If an employee has not lived in the state of Ohio for three years then additional checks are performed.

Can my adult son/daughter keep seeing their own primary care physician, dentist, or specialists?

Yes.
